The Best Home Boxing Setup for Beginners (Australia)
Share
You don't need a commercial gym to get a great boxing workout. With a small corner of a garage or spare room and a few key pieces of gear, you can build strength, cardio, coordination and confidence at home. Here's exactly what a beginner needs — and what you can skip.
The essentials
1. Boxing gloves. Start with a 12oz–14oz pair — versatile enough for bag work and light enough to stay snappy. See our glove size guide if you're unsure.
2. Hand wraps. Non-negotiable. They protect your wrists and knuckles and keep your gloves fresher. Learn the basic wrap — it takes five minutes to pick up.
3. A bag. This is your main training tool. For most beginners, a free-standing bag is the easiest start — no drilling, no mounting, and you can move it. If you can mount a bracket, a hanging heavy bag gives more solid resistance. Not sure? Read our punching bag buyer's guide.
4. Space and flooring. You need about 2×2 metres of clear floor and enough height to throw punches overhead. A rubber mat or interlocking tiles protect your floor and give better footing.
Nice-to-haves (add these as you progress)
- A reflex or boxing machine — light-up target training that builds reaction speed and makes solo sessions genuinely fun. See the boxing machine range.
- Focus pads or Thai pads — if you train with a partner, pads turn them into your coach and add variety.
- A speed ball or double-end bag — for timing, rhythm and reflexes once you've got the basics.
- A skipping rope — the cheapest, best conditioning tool in boxing.
A simple beginner routine
Three rounds of skipping to warm up, then 4–6 rounds of 3 minutes on the bag (jab, cross, hooks, basic combos), with a minute's rest between. Finish with core work and stretching. Twenty to thirty minutes, three times a week, and you'll feel the difference fast.
Budget tiers
- Starter: gloves + wraps + free-standing bag.
- Building: add a reflex/boxing machine and a skipping rope.
- Complete: add pads for partner work, a speed ball, and quality flooring.
